Our Library

Forney High School has a library of which we are proud. This year the school had added a new set of Encyclopedias and about forty new books by well-known authors. We receive several weekly or monthly publications. Namely: Look, Life, Saturday Evening Post, Better Homes and Gardens, Popular Science, Time, Newsweek, and Readers' Digest.

Some of the older books and magazines show how careless we have been. Some of the pages have been torn and others are gone. Nearly all the pages are turned down as pupil after pupil found a stopping place.

Their appearance should serve as a challenge to us. Will these new and valuable books soon lose their usefulness because of carelessness? The books should serve the purpose for which they were bought.

Just what do you think of our school library? Is it a place of interest and do you make use of the knowledge stored there? Does it give you a feeling of security to know that whatever the question you can usually find the answer in the library?

Senior News

September 8, 1947 was the beginning of the end for the twenty five members of the senior class this year. Starting the first week off on the right track class officers were elected. They are the following:

President ---- Dorothy Smith
Vice Pres ---- Wendell Tanner
Sect. & Tres. ---- Glenn Williams
Class Mothers are ------
Mrs. Glenn Williams, Sr.
Mrs. Ed Smith
Mrs. Cleon Lewis

Wednesday, September 17, the class selected their class rings. They are oval shape, yellow gold. Few members of the class had stone and the rest had all metal. We are hoping to receive our rings before Christmas.

Miss Ruby Roland was slected as our class queen. This entitled her to enter the beauty contest at the American Legion Carnival. She came out third in the race and received a very nice gift.

Sports

Football season is here again, and the Forney High Football team is well on its way.

The boys that are going out are, Elvis Osburne end, Kenneth Smith end, Glenn Williams tackle, Tommy Jones tackle, Billy Mongomery tackle, Wendell Tanner guard, Ervin Layne guard, Dickie King guard, Edward Nichols guard, Pat Costello center, Frank Hickson back, Jimmy Smith back, Judd Lewis back, Young Powell back, and Don Carpenter end. So far the Jackrabbits have played three games. The first was Wylie, Forney was defeated by a score of 13-0.

Next on the list was Terrell, the Jackrabbits were again defeated 47-0.

Last Friday night the Jackrabbits played Mabank. The boys played a good game, although a few of the players were injured. The final score was 25-6 with Mabank the winner. Next week they will meet the Richardson Eagles at Richardson. Everyone try and come. We hope to see a good pepsquad there too.

New Teachers Added to Staff

We have three new teachers added to our staff this year. They are:

Miss Margaret Riley of Wills Point, Texas. She attended school at North Texas State. She majored in Business Administration and minored in English. She teaches typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and Spanish.

Mrs. Thomas Whittemore of Forney teaches Gen. Science and all the Homemaking classes. She went to school in N.T.S.C. majored in Home Economics and minored in English.

Mr. George Day who lives in Kaufman handles the Math and Science Department. He went to school at T.C.U. but graduated at North Texas. He majored in Physics and minored in Math.

We welcome the new teachers as well as welcome back the others.

Results of Carnival

Well, it was close race, but the Jr. finally won. The total amount of votes for Jr's was 61800. The Jr. queen was Margaret Taylor. The class won $25.00 cash, which they badly needed. The Sophomores were second with 56800 votes. Bridget Brennan was queen. Then came the Senior with 34600 votes and Ruby Roland as their queen. Last and least came the Freshmen with 3700 votes and Pat Hancock for their queen.

Sophomores - $15.00
Seniors - $10.00
Freshmen - $5.00

Freshman News

The freshman class opened with fifteen enrolled, six boys and nine girls. The class officers:

President ---- Tommy Jones
Vice Pres. ---- Pat Hancock
Secretary ---- Grace Stone
Reporter ---- Mazeppa Ligon
Home Room Mothers:
Mrs. J.C. Ligon
Mrs. Ode Stovall
Mrs. Roy Kinard

Bettye Nichols was elected as pep squad leader from the freshman class and Nelda Pat Hancock as carnival queen.

Tommy Jones plays right tackle on the footbal team.

The class hopes to have an interesting freshman year.

Sophomore News

The sophomore class has not changed much. We welcome Delores Faubion, and Nelda Tatum who recently joined our class.

We elected officers again and we think they couldn't be beat.
They are as follows:

President ---- Bridget Brennan
Vice Pres ---- Dickie King
Secretary and Tres. ---- Margie Miller
Reporter ---- Young Powell

Almost all the girls of our class are in the pep squad this year and we hope they are as good as they look.

We have only four boys out for football so we will name them. They are: Young Powell, Edward Nichols, Dickie King, and Billy Joe Montgomery. Billy Joe represented us in the Mabank game and we must admit he did a grand job.

We appreciate everybody who was kind enough to vote for the Sophomore class when we were selling tickets for the American Legion and we hope you all do the same next year.

We got off to a good start this week by winning fifteen dollars Saturday nite. Bridget Brennan our class queen, was presented with a nice prize. Margie Miller said that was a pretty easy five dollars just for selling a hundred and twelve tickets. We made quite a bit on our hot dogs at the Terrell football game. We plan on having fun with it later on.

We hope everyone will enjoy the chapel program we plan to have ready before long.
