Plan Rites for Sisters Killed in Auto Crash
Two Women, One Formerly of Dallas, Die Following Collision

Dallas Morning News
23 March 1932

Forney, Tex., March 23 (Special). Funeral services were being planned here today for Mrs. W.C. Starnes and Mrs. Newt Douglass, sisters, both of Forney, who were killed in an automobile accident Tuesday afternoon on the Dallas-Terrell highway, in which five others were injured.

The injured:
Glenn Douglass, 17, of Forney, who suffered cuts, bruises and a possible fracture of the skull.

W.C. Starnes, also of Forney, who suffered minor cuts and bruises.

J.R. Thomas, Hiram Buchanan and Forest Gee, all of Nacogdoches, Tex., who suffered severe injuries.

Thomas was on his way to Dallas with Buchanan and Gee to enter a hospital for examination and treatment for injuries received last week in an automobile accident near his home. Mrs. Douglass and Mrs. Starnes were en route from Forney to Terrell.

Third Car Caused Crash

The accident occurred when a third machine passed the Thomas car just as the automobile driven by Mrs. Douglass came off a bridge. The third car caused the Thomas car to swerve and the two cars collided head on, the Douglass machine rolling down an embankment.

The injured were taken to Terrell in an Anderson Clayton Bros. ambulance. Mrs. Starnes died within an hour after reaching the hospital, Mrs. Douglass died three hours later. Both sustained fractured skulls.

Mrs. Starnes formerly was matron of a private girls’ school in Dallas but had moved back to Forney, her old family home, last Friday.

Funeral services for the two sisters were to be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Forney, with interment in Forney cemetery.

Note: Girdie Starnes is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery with no headstone.  Lee Anderson Douglass is buried at Hillcrest next to her husband.
