Suicide Verdict Given in Death of Mexia Businessman

Mexia, Tex., Oct. 3 – (Special) – A.M. Farmer, Jr., 37, prominent filling station operator, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at his home here late Thursday, according to Justice of the Peace Tom L. Cox, who rendered the coroner’s verdict.

Farmer had been a resident of Mexia for the last twenty-five years. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He was an active member of Springfield Lodge No. 74, A.F. & A.M., and was a Lion Club member. Ill health was given as the reason.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter, Dannie, 8, and Mary Lou, 4; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Farmer, Sr.; two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Hinton and Miss Mamie Lou Farmer, all of Forney, Tex.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed, pending arrival of relatives.

Funeral services for A.J. Farmer, Jr., age 37, were held at the First Baptist Church in Mexia Friday afternoon at four o’clock with the Rev. Robert L. Dobson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. L.M. Joines, of Forney.

Mr. Farmer’s body lay in state at the First Baptist church from three to four o’clock Friday afternoon.

Mr. Farmer died at his home here Thursday at 6:00 p.m. of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to Justice of the Peace Tom L. Cox. Worry over ill health was given as the reason for the suicide.

Mr. Farmer, a graduate of Texas A&M College, had been a resident of Mexia for more than 15 years. For several years he managed the Mexia Battery and Tire Co., and for the past two years he operated a filling station under his own name. He was a member of the First Baptist church, the Lions club, and was an active member of the local Masonic lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maurine Rogers Farmer; two children, Dannie, 8, and Mary Lou, 4; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Farmer, Sr., of Forney; and two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Hinton of Forney and Miss Mayme Lou Farmer of Dallas.

Following services at the First Baptist church, Mr. Farmer was buried in the Mexia cemetery. Springfield Lodge No. 74, A.F. & A.M., had charge of the services at the cemetery.

Active pallbearers were J.W. Simmons, A.A. Johnston, George M. Tidwell, Herman Hitt, W.W. Rowland, C.A. Chambers, L.L. Gladney, T.T. Barnes, E.C. O’Bannion, F.M. Eaton.

Honorary pallbearers were all Master, Masons. Corley Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

 

Note: Andrew Jackson Farmer, Jr. is buried at the Mexia City Cemetery next to his wife Maureen Rogers Farmer.
