Rain and Local Progress at Forney

FORNEY, Tex., July 3 – There have recently been good showers all through this section and a full corn crop is assured. Cotton looks well. Prospects for more rain are good.

Prof. Harper and wife organized a music class here last night consisting of twenty-five members.

The handsome residence of Mr. D.G. McKellar is nearing completion, and will add much to the appearance of the southern portion of the village. Several new residences are going up, and there is a prospect of some substantial business improvements being made soon.

FORNEY, Tex., Aug. 7 – It is probably an election on local option will be held in this precinct in a short time, as the matter is being mentioned with considerable interest.

There has been no rain here for several days and crops are beginning to suffer. The indications are that we will have rain before morning.

The finest corn crop this country ever knew will be gathered this fall, and the cotton is in good condition and promises a heavy yield.

FORNEY, Tex., Oct. 3 – Tom Lokey of this place left Saturday evening with alleged mortgaged property belonging to Mr. W.S. Newton. Deputy Sheriff Selman and posse followed him to near Canton, in Van Zandt County, but here they lost his trail and up to date has not been captured. They are still in pursuit.

FORNEY, Tex., Nov 8 – Quite a row was up here Sunday night between the town boys and the negroes. Several of the boys went to the negro church for the purpose of breaking up the meeting. A row ensued between Albert Loveless, white, and Clarence Stephens, colored. Hot words were passed, Loveless, it is said, making threats against Stephens, whereupon Stephens drew a pistol, but an officer, who had heard the loud talking, got there in time to catch Stephens before any harm was done. He was bound over to the County Court and, failing to give bond, was taken to jail.

All the tramps seem to have intended to make Forney their headquarters this week. About meal-time they can be seen about the back door asking for something to eat.

All the fair visitors report a splendid time during the fair at Dallas last week.

Cotton is still coming in at Forney at a lively rate. About 5000 bales have been received up to date.

The public schools at this place opened Monday, Prof. E.G. Lewis is principal and Miss Minnie Ledbetter assistant.

FORNEY, Tex., Nov. 29 – The examining trial of W.H. Brazewell was called in the Justice Court today on charge of selling mortgaged cotton. After hearing the evidence on both sides Justice J.S. Woods bound over the defendant to the District Court in th sum of $600. In default of bond he was taken to jail.

The weather has been very cold and disagreeable the past week.

New sidewalks are being built up Bois d’Arc street.
