State champion Sonora dominated the Class A all-state first team, as selected by the Texas Sportswriters Association. The Broncos, who defeated Forney in the state finals, 39-28, placed three players on the first unit. Forney placed two boys.

Quarterback Laney Cook, end Noe Chavez, and halfback Ed Lee Renfro were Broncos named to the first team. Making the first 11 from Forney were guard Gary Whittemore and fullback Larry Bush.

“Whittemore and Bush were definitely our top two boys,” said Forney coach Johnnie Henderson. “I’m glad they made the team. They certainly deserved it.”

Another area player, tackle John Hollowell of Honey Grove, also made the first unit. The Warriors had two selections on the second unit. They were quarterback Phil Fuller and guard David Stroud. Wills Point’s Joe Dempsey was a third team center selection.

Joining Cook, Renfro and Bush in the first team backfield is White Deer’s Vernon Marlar. The 6-2, 190-pound senior picked up 1,304 yards this season on 171 carries. He scored 15 touchdowns and ran three two-point conversions.

Bush scored 126 points on 21 touchdowns. An honor student, he had a 6.5-yard rushing average on 1,369 yards on 209 carries. The 200-pound Bush was never thrown for a loss this season.

Cook, a 6-2, 180-pounder, hit on 67 of 140 passes for 1,388 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also picked up 271 yards on 58 carries. He scored 71 points and had a 40.1 yard punting average.

Teammate Renfro gained 1,392 yards on 118 carries for an outstanding 11.7-yard average. He scored 133 points and had touchdown runs of 80 yards or more.

Although only 5-8 and weighing but 140 pounds, Chavez was an outstanding receiver for Sonora. He grabbed 47 passes this season for 993 yards and 12 touchdowns. His completion average was 21.1 yards per catch. In addition to his receiving talents, Chavez returned 12 punts for 176 yards and eight kickoffs for 240 yards.
