Forney Jackrabbits Overpower Hallsville Bobcats 28 To 6

The Forney Jackrabbits whipped their weight in Bobcats last night with a barrage of touchdowns that torpedoed Hallsville high’s hopes of a regional title. Griffin, Aslin, Osborne, Roland and company again proved too much of a combination to handle and when the whistle halted hostilities the Kaufman county team had another 28 to 7 victory under its well-filled belt. It was the 25th straight triumph for the Rabbits.

The West county powerhouse made its first successful strike in the initial period. The touchdown play was set up when Robert Griffin, Forney halfback, intercepted a Bobcat pass. In a series of power plays the ball was anchored on the Hallsville two-yard line, from where Roland pushed it over. The point was good.

The second score developed when the Rabbits took a punt to the Hallsville goal in 10 grinding, yard-gaining plays, with Aslin going wide around the left side for the final 10 yards. Point was good.

Griffin carried the Forney mail for the third strike as the Rabbits moved straight up the field in their typical powerhouse fashion. On the ninth consecutive play the ball was placed on the one-yard line, from whence Griffin powered it over. Roland booted the extra point.

The final score again featured Griffin, who snagged a Bobcat pass to give teh Rabbits possession of the ball in the fading minutes of the final quarter. In 12 ground plays Forney pushed the ball to the Hallsville 11 where Griffin took it for the final yardage, Roland gain kicking the extra point.

The Cats were outclassed all the way, though they did manage to mount a spectacular but brief aerial offensive during the final minutes of the fourth period. Bobcat receivers connected with five consecutive passes for a total gain of over 70 yards. An extended period of action as efficient as that and Forney may have had much trouble skinning their opponents.

The Forney team was hampered by a series of costly fumbles and the Bobcats took advantage of one to gain their single score. After the Rabbit fumble, Bobcat Bruner got it. Hallsville’s wide-ranging quarterback Votto Gaddis (who proved to be about nine-tenths of the bobcat team) sent a pass to Milton Russell, who carried the ball across.

The Cat forward wall was the key factor in Hallsville’s defeat, Gaddis, who otherwise would have turned in a much better game, could always count on three or four Jackrabbits piercing his line and being upon him before he could either run or find receivers for his passes. The Bobcat line was never able to stop their opponents for any length of time.

Conversely, the Forney forward wall usually gave complete protection to the backfield and opened gaping holes in the Hallsville line for long yardage gains by Rabbit runners.

Forney also put up an effective defense against repeated Bobcat aerial attempts, wit the exception of one short period when the visitors got a good offense cooking.

Last night’s game, played before 2,000 persons on Kaufman’s Norman Field, made Forney the title holder in Districts 19-B, 20-B, 17B and 18B. Comprising the region. It was the final game for the Rabbits. Class B goes no further than region.
