Minutes of the Forney First Baptist Church, beginning on Jan 5, 1913.

 

Sunday Jan. 5, 1913

After preaching by pastor L.B. JENKINS, the church met in special conference.

1. On motion and second, letters of dismission were granted to Bro. J.C. GARNER and his wife.

2. On motion and second, Bro. L.C. STALLING was elected Assistant teacher
of Bro. Albert Spellman’s class.

3. On motion and second, it was voted to give Antioch Church (Hard Shell Baptist) privilege to preach here next Friday night. Bro. DENTON to do the preaching.

4. On motion and second: A subscription to pastor’s salary was taken from members present, the subscription amounting to $227.25. Brethren Joe DOZIER, Tom SPELLMAN, and R.L. ANTHONY and Sisters Myrtle SOWELL and Gertrude LEE were appointed to see other members and complete the subscription.

5. On motion and second, the conference was adjourned.

Jan. 19, 1913

The First Baptist Church of Forney Texas met in conference Saturday Jan 19,
1913. After preaching by pastor LB JENKINS, Church went into conference. Clerk being absent, H.A. CONWAY was asked to act as clerk protem. Minutes of two previous meetings were read and adopted. A motion was made and carried to change days of meeting from second and fourth Sundays to first and third Sundays.

Conference to be on Saturday before third Sunday. A motion was made and
carried to prefer charges against the following brethren: Ben SHELTMAN, Jim
HILL, Grover HARRIS for drunkenness. The following brethren were appointed to wait on said brethren: W.E. HARVEY, E.J. JONES, and A.A. DARDEN. No further business conference adjourned.

Feb 15, 1913

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Bro. H.A. CONWAY was asked to act as moderator on the invitation
for membership, whereupon Bro. and Sister JENKINS presented themselves
for membership. On account of the irregularity of the church which granted
their letter they were received on statement into full fellowship with this church and right hand of church fellowship extended.

3. Bro. W.E. HARVEY reported that the disorderly brethren had been seen,
but for the most part were very indifferent. He favored the committee having more time.

4. On motion and second, the church voted to give them one more month with Bro. N.C. WHITTEMORE added to the committee.

5. On motion and second the church elected Bro. Tom SPELLMAN to collect
pastor’s salary.

6. No further business the conference adjourned.

March 15, 1913

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Report of the committee to see disorderly brethren was made by Bro.
W.E. HARVEY. No reconciliation made.

2. On motion and second the church withdrew fellowship from Ben SHELTMAN, Jim HILL and Grover HARRIS, all for drunkenness. The vote was taken on each one separately.

3. On motion and second the church granted letters of dismission to Bro. and Sister LEDBETTER.

4. The ladies aid society agree to be janitor for one month.

5. On motion and second the church invited Bro. S.S. BUSSELL to give a lecture on foreign mission work, using stereopticon views, the church agreeing to pay his expenses.

6. On motion and second, the conference adjourned until tomorrow.

March 16, 1913

After preaching by pastor the church went into conference and set the third Sunday of next July to begin our protracted meeting expressing a preference for our pastor Rev LB JENKINS to do the preaching at that time. No further business conference adjourned.

April 19, 1913

After preaching by pastor, church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Ladies Aid Society reported a list of their work for quarter ending March 31, 1913.

3. On motion and second the church voted to receive their report.

4. Ladies Aid Society agreed to continue as sexton for awhile.

5. On motion and second the church voted to give Pastor LB JENKINS
a leave of absence the third Sunday in May to attend Southern Baptist Convention at St. Louis, MO. Some brethren volunteered to raise some money to pay his expenses.

6. No further business conference adjourned.

June 14, 1913

This is to certify that Bro. A.J. KINCAID and his wife Sister Althia A. KINCAID are members of this church in good standing, and are at their own request hereby dismissed from us to unite with you when they shall have so united their connection with us will cease.

July 19, 1913

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. On motion and second the church granted a letter of dismission to Sister
M.L. VINSON. No further business conference adjourned.

August 16, 1913

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted, with the addition of one item omitted, viz: Letter granted Bro. Forest McMAHAN.

2. Church elected brethren E.M. DOZIER and G.B. WESLEY, messengers,
East Fork Association to meet with the Friendship Church on August 20, 1913.

3. On motion and second the church empowered any of our members attending the association to become our messengers in case our elected messengers failed to attend.

4. On motion and second the church instructed her messengers to pledge not over $200 for all purposes.

5. On motion and second the church appointed our pastor, Bro. LB JENKINS
and J.T. MILLER to prepare letter to association to be adopted by church tomorrow.

6. On motion and sec. the church appointed Brethren LB JENKINS, J.T. MILLER and W.E. HARVEY to buy a new church record and to revise the roll.

7. Bro. Fred BUFKINS was received by letter into fellowship with this church.
Adjourned until tomorrow.

 

August 17, 1913

8. Sister Georgia CHANDLER was received by letter into fellowship with this
church.

9. Letter to association was read and adopted, subject to changes as further reports were received. No further business conference adjourned.

Sept. 20, 1913

After reading and few remarks by pastor church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted. New church record received
at a cost of $4.75.

2. On motion with second the church instructed the committee on church roll to enroll in new record the names of all our members living here. Also the same committee with E.M. DOZIER added to discover the whereabouts of other members. Carried.

3. On motion and second the church withdrew fellowship from Bro. R.W. GRAY for unchristian conduct.

4. On motion and sec. the church appointed brethren R.P. PINSON, J.T. MILLER, and E.M. DOZIER to have parsonage lot fence fixed. Also same committee to get a stove for parsonage.

5. On motion and sec. the church elected Bro. LB JENKINS and wife as
messengers to the association of the B.M.A. to meet at Cleburne. Also any of our members attending the association to be messengers in case of absence. Adjourned.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. The same committees were continued to complete their work. No further
business. Conference adjourned.

Nov. 15, 1913

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted. Report on church roll, wrote 22 letters, heard from 2. Lela NALLS dead.

2. On motion and sec. the committee on church roll continued until work is
complete – carried.

3. Committee on lot fence and to get a stove continued.

4. Ladies Aid Society gave up janitorship.

5. On motion and sec. the deacons were empowered to employ a janitor.

6. On motion and sec. the church voted to give $25 for county missions.
Adjourned until tomorrow.

 

Nov. 16, 1913

After Sunday school, the following officers and teachers were elected for
another year. R.L. ANTHONY, Supt., W.E. YATES, Assistant Supt., Arthur
FITZGERALD Secretary and Treasurer, Jessie NELSON, Assistant Sect.

TEACHERS: J.T. MILLER, Gertrude LEE, Annis(sic) PINSON, Mamie DOZIER,
Sister BOONE, Sister JENKINS, Myrtle YATES. Moved and sec. that the Sunday School be graded. – carried.

 

Nov. 16, 1913

1. After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

2. This being time to call pastor Bro. R.L. ANTHONY was elected Moderator.

3. On motion and sec. it was voted to call a pastor for 3/4 time, 35 for 14 against.

4. On motion and sec., it was voted to call by acclamation Bro. LB JENKINS –
carried unanimously.

5. On motion and sec., the church elected Bro. E.M. DOZIER, Treasurer.

6. On motion and sec., the church set 1st, 2nd and 4th Sundays for preaching and conference on Saturday before the 2nd Sunday.

7. On motion and sec. the church elected J.T.MILLER, Church Clerk.

Dec. 7, 1913

1. On motion and sec. the church elected Brethren LB JENKINS and RP PINSON messengers to a called session of the B.M.A. at Dallas to meet Dec. 16, 1913.

2. On motion and sec, the church granted letters of dismission to Bro. and Sister H.A. CONWAY.

3. On motion and sec. the church gave the Ladies Aid Society the privilege to raise money to build more room for the Sunday School.
No further business conference adjourned.

Jan 10, 1914

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.|

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. On call for acknowledgments, Bro. L.C. STALLINGS stated that he had danced and was sorry for so doing and wanted forgiveness, and on motion and sec., the church accepted his statement, and forgave him.

3. On motion and sec. the church discharged the committee on improvements.

4. The report of the committee on church roll was made by Bro. LB JENKINS. And upon motion and sec., a committee was appointed to notify our members living away from us, that unless we hard from them in 30 days, the church would take action. The committee was: J.T. MILLER, Sisters CONNER and KEMP and E.M. DOZIER.

5. On motion and sec. the church withdrew fellowship from Sister Ara COLE on the charge of heresy.

6. On motion and sec the church granted a letter of dismission to Sister Jerusha PAYTON.

7. On motion and sec., the church elected Bro. Tom SPELLMAN collector of the pastor’s salary. No further business, conference adjourned.

Jan 11, 1914

1. On motion and sec. Bro. W.E. YATES, Sisters Minnie HUGHES and FITZHUGH were elected teachers of the Intermediate, Beginners, and Junior classes respectively.

2. On motion and sec. Bro. and Sister FITZHUGH were received by letters into fellowship with this church and the right hand of church fellowship extended.

Feb. 7, 1914
After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Committee on church roll made a partial report and was continued.

3. On motion and second the church granted letters of dismission to S.L. YARRELL and S.G. YARRELL.

4. On motion and second, the church granted letters of dismission to Bro. and Sister W.A. BUFKIN, also Bro. Fred BUFKIN.

5. The Ladies Aid Society made their annual report which was adopted.

6. On motion and sec. the church withdrew fellowship from Sister Julia RUBLEE on the charge of dancing. No further business, conference adjourned.

Feb 8, 1914

On motion and sec. our pastor was authorized to appoint a committee to have flue built. The committee: W.E. YATES, NC WHITTEMORE and E.M. DOZIER.

No further business. Conference adjourned.

March 7, 1914

After reading and prayer by Bro. SELMAN, church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. The committee on church flue reported work done and paid for. Whereupon the committee was discharged.

3. The committee on church roll reported their work complete as nearly as possible, and on motion and sec. the committee was discharged.

4. On motion and sec., the church voted to have recorded the names of all our known members in new book, and made a separate list of the unknown and number them all.

5. On motion and sec. the church voted to begin our protracted meeting, the sec. Sunday in July and also to invite Bro. L.S. KNIGHT of Italy to help in meeting. Bro. JENKINS agreed to notify Bro. KNIGHT of the invitation.

6. On motion and sec., Our pastor appointed Brethren W.E. YATES, AA DARDEN, and E.M. DOZIER as a committee to discover the true nature of Bro. WILHOIT’S gambling. No further business. Conference adjourned.

April 5

On April 5 the church elected Sister Mary HOOD teacher of Class No. 2; Also Sister Nora FITZGERALD teacher of Class No. 7. At night of same day, Sister Mary ALLEN was received by letter into full fellowship with this church and right hand of church fellowship extended.

 

April 11, 1914

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. The committee to see Bro. WILHOIT not all being present was continued.

3. On motion and sec., the church authorized our pastor to appoint a committee to take out old flue from the church-house and also to put screen wire on parsonage. Committee: R.L. ANTHONY, J.T. MILLER and D.D. KEMP.

4. Committee on improvements reported favorable to build more room to rear end of the church house.

5. On motion and sec. (Apr. 12) the church set 3 o’clock p.m. to meet and have carpenters present and decide just what improvements to make. The hour for meeting came, but for lack of attendance on the part of our membership, nothing was done.

On May 3, the church elected Sisters Rubal MAUPIN, Callie HILL and Jewell STONE, teachers respectively of classes Nos. 2, 5, and 7.

May 9, 1914

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Bro. WILHOIT acknowledged to playing cards, said he did not gamble. On motion and second the church accepted his statement and forgave him.

3. Committee on flue and screens continued.

4. On motion and second conference adjourned.

June 13, 1914

After preaching by pastor the church called in conference. Reading and approval of minutes of last conference.

2. Motion and sec. to dismiss committee on building flue and screening. Carried.

3. Motion and sec. to procure a tent for use during our meeting. Carried.

4. Motion and sec. that pastor appoint a committee to secure permission to occupy certain grounds for tent meeting. Carried.

5. Motion and sec. that Bro. JENKINS and E.M. DOZIER be a committee to look up and secure a tent. Carried.

6. On motion and sec. conference adjourned.

July 11, 1914

After preaching by pastor, the church met in conference.

1. The committee to secure a tent and a place to erect it got one at a cost of $25 for two weeks. The freight on tent was $1.35. Permission was given to erect it just in front of Sister PINSON’s residence.

3. On motion and sec. our pastor appointed brethren, E.M. DOZIER, N.C.
WHITTEMORE, A.A. DARDEN, and M.L. HEAD to collect for expenses of the meeting.

4. On motion and sec. Brethren N.C. WHITTEMORE, M.L. HEAD, C.W. BOONE and L.B. JENKINS were made a committee to look after the tent in case of stormy weather and also to provide water and ice for the meeting.

5. On motion and sec. the church voted to begin service at ten o’clock each morning and 8:15 each evening.

6. On motion and sec. conference was left open for other business that might come up during the meeting.

After preaching by pastor on Sunday August 9th.

1. On motion and sec. the church elected brethren E.R. ALLEN, G.B. WESLEY and J.C. GARNER messengers to association at Elmo to meet August 20th.

2. Also authorized any of our church attending the association to be messenger in case of absence of any of the elected messengers.

3. On motion and sec. the church granted Bro. JENKINS a leave of absence tonight (August 9) to begin a meeting at Coats School house.

4. On motion and sec. the church empowered Superintendent to provide teachers for some of the classes in Sunday school. Subject to approval of the church.

Sept. 27, 1914

On motion and sec. the church voted to dispense with our 11 o’clock service Sunday, Oct. 4, if the union prayer service was set for that time. Brethren J.C. GARNER, R.L. ANTHONY, and Sister Myrtle YATES were made a committee to confer with the committees of other churches about prayer service.

 

Oct. 10, 1914

After reading and prayer by Bro. J.C. GARNER the church met in conference.

1. Bro. J.C. GARNER was elected moderator.

2. Minutes of previous conferences read and approved.

3. Bro. GARNER reported meeting with committees of other churches to arrange a union prayer service Oct. 4, 1914 for hostilities in the great war in Europe to cease. The committees were fully represented and selected the Methodist Church as the place. The time from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 4, 1914. No further business conference adjourned.

Oct. 25, 1914

The church met in special conference and elected brethren L.B. JENKINS and Jason SOWELL messengers to the B.M.A. at Dallas Nov. 3 to 6 with brethren J.C. GARNER and N.C. WHITTEMORE alternates. The Ladies Aid Society was empowered to use the money that they raised for Sunday School rooms in repairing the parsonage.

Nov 7, 1914

After preaching by pastor, the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and approved.

2. On motion and sec. the church withdrew fellowship from Sister Mary ALLEN on the charge of heresy.

3. On motion and sec. the pastor appointed brethren R.L. ANTHONY, Grover HUGHES, and J.T. DOZIER to solicit subscriptions for pastor’s salary for next year.

4. On motion and sec. the church deferred the election of Sunday School officers and teachers until the 4th Sunday of this month.

5. On motion and sec. Conference adjourned.

Nov. 8, 1914

After preaching by pastor church met in conference to call a pastor.

1. Moved and sec. to call a pastor for on half time. Carried.

2. It was moved and sec. to suspend the regular order and call by acclamation Bro. L.B. JENKINS. Carried unanimously.

3. Moved and sec. to give $600 and pay monthly. Carried.

4. On motion and sec. J.T. MILLER was re-elected Church Clerk.

5. On motion and sec. E.M. DOZIER was re-elected Treasurer.

6. On motion and sec. C.W. BOONE was elected Collector of Pastor’s salary.

Nov. 22, 1914

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference for the election of officers and teachers for Sunday School.

1. On motion and sec. the church elected Bro. R.L. ANTHONY superintendent,
and Bro. J.C. GARNER assistant superintendent.

2. On motion and sec. the church elected Bro. Arthur FITZGERALD secretary
and treasurer, and Miss Mabel HILL assistant secretary.

3. On motion and sec. the church empowered the pastor and superintendent to fill any vacancy that might occur among the teachers during the year, subject to the approval of the church.

4. On motion and sec. the church elected the following teachers for next year:
