Minutes of the Forney First Baptist Church, beginning on Jan 12, 1907.

 

Jan 12, 1907

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Called for reading of minutes of last meeting. Minutes approved.

2. Offered opportunity for membership.

3. Called for report of insurance committee. Reported that by general assent
by inactivity it was concluded not to insure.

4. Letters granted Mrs. T.H. DAILEY and Miss Etha DAILEY. New Business.

5. On motion and sec. charges were brought against Brother Jack SOUTH for
drunkenness. Sustained.

6. On motion and sec. charges were brought against Mrs. J.E. SOUTH for
unchristian conduct. Sustained. On motion and second a committee as follows were appointed: Bro. J.C. GARNER, Bro. J.T. MILLER and E.M. DOZIER to see Mrs. J.E. SOUTH and Mr. J.E. SOUTH, also the same committee were appointed to see Bro. J.M. DAUGHERTY in regard to his request to be excluded and report at prayer meeting the 22nd of this month. On motion and sec. Bro. P.C. SCOTT and Bro. J.A. LEE and L.L. JONES were appointed to draft resolutions against certain kinds of indulgencies such as 42 and submit them to the church for action. On motion and sec. Adjourned to mee Jan. 22, 1907 at prayer meeting.

CORRECTION – Jan 22, 1907

This committee were also to see sister S.L. FLEMMING who was retained
on church book since the re-organization. The church in April 4, 1885.
Committee report that she says she has never considered that she was a member since the split and desires for her name to be dropped from our roll. On motion and sec. Sister FLEMMING was dropped from our roll.

Jan 22, 1907

After reading chapter by Bro. R.L. ANTHONY, and prayer by several of the
Brethren, the church was called into conference by pastor.

1. Called for minutes of last meeting which were read, corrected and approved. On motion and sec. Bro. J.T. VANCE was elected moderator protem. Call for report of committee Bro. J.C. GARNER spoke for the committee saying we saw both J.E. SOUTH he plead guilt to the charges said maybe he might come to church but said nothing positive. Did not express any sorry or an unpleasantness about it, but was rather indifferent. After some discussion with references to 2 Thess. III and II 6 Corr. II a motion was made and sec. to withdraw fellowship from Bro. J.E. SOUTH. The motion prevailed.

Brother J.C. GARNER reported as spokesman for committee about Sister SOUTH as follows. “We saw her at 11 o’clock Monday, had talked to her, she said she would come to the church meeting but had better leave her out. She made statement to committee which we did not request she acknowledged a difference between herself and certain Sister and our Bro. pastor. She made some statement like this, ‘Do you think I could go and sit in church with that old hippocrit [sic] Mrs. HUNEYCUT.’ She was not willing to make any accessions. I went back to see Sister HUNEYCUT who desired to do anything she could to make things right with Mrs. SOUTH, so I went back to see her again but could not get her to agree to make any accesuas [sic] so Brother SOUTH phoned me next morning that she, his wife had done no wrong and would not make any apology.”

On motion and sec. report of committee was received as reported. On motion and sec. the church withdrew fellowship from Mrs. J.E. SOUTH. Motion prevailed. The committee reported that Bro. J.M. DAUGHERTY said it was a mistake about his want to be excluded from the church said he did not feel worthy of membership. He knew he did not do right, but he did not want to be excluded. On motion and sec. Adjourned to meet at regular conference.

Feb 9, 1907

The Baptist Church met in regular conference Saturday 11 am.

1. Opened doors of church. Bro. W.C. TAYLOR letter was read to the church.

2. The committee on resolutions read their report and after discussion and amendment it was adopted. Bro. J.C. GARNER offered his resignation as Deacon which was not granted. Bro. R.L. ANTHONY offered to return to the church his license to preach which was accepted. Bro. GARNER read a resolution which was lost without a motion. THE RESOLUTION AGAINST GAMING OF ANY KIND.

Baptist Church met after preaching by Bro. S.H. SHAUGHTER in regular conference.

1. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

2. Letters granted Bro. M.P. HUDSON and wife and son Donald HUDSON.

Mar 10, 1907

After preaching by Bro. SLAUGHTER, a collection was taken for State Missions which amounted to $24.05 which was turned over to Bro. SLAUGHTER and his receipt taken.

Apr 13, 1907

The Baptist Church met after preaching by pastor.

1. Opened doors of church. Mrs. Florence McCOOL presented letter and was
received into full fellowship.

2. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

3. Letters granted Brother BOWDEN and wife and John.

4. On motion and sec. the church set Tuesday night after the 3rd. Sunday and that Bro. P.C. SCOTT be instructed to invite a Presbytery to assist in the work. Motion carried.

5. On motion and sec. the church decided to begin protracted meetings the second Sunday in July 1907 with the desire expressingly the church present that our preacher do the preaching.

6. On motion and sec. Sister CONNER and the JONES were appointed on a
committee to investigate the whereabouts and standing of some of our members who have moved away.

7. On motion and second the church withdrew fellowship from Sister Ora ADAMS for unchristian conduct. On motion and second, adjourned

Apr 23, 1907

After preaching by Brother J.J. KELLUM, the church according to previous mention called in council Elders J.J. KELLAM, L.S. DARLING, J.A. LEE, J.G. NALLS and P.C. SCOTT Deacons: C.J. STARNES, J.C. GARNER, L.L. JONES who
after a thoughingly [sic] and deliberate examination of Bro. W.C. TAYLOR as a candidate for the ordination to the ministry heartily recommended him for the same.

Bro. L.S. DARLING conducted the exam initiation Bro. P.C. SCOTT the ordination prayer, Bro. J.A. LEE gave the charge and presented to Bible. On motion and sec. conference adjourned.

ordination which was correct.

 

May 11, 1907

After preaching by pastor the church met in regular conference.

1. Opened doors of church.

2. Minutes read of last regular meeting and approved. Minutes of call meeting to ordain Bro. W.C. TAYLOR after corrections were adopted.

3. Standing committee – none.

Special committee not ready to report. A special collection taken up among the church of $1.50 to assist in sending Brother SCOTT to S. Baptist convention. On motion and sec. adjourned.

After preaching by pastor, the opportunity was offered for membership. Bro. Dell HARVEY and wife Beatrice HARVEY, Mr. J.T. DOZIER, Miss Maymie DOZIER
and Susie DOZIER were received by letter.

After preaching by pastor an opportunity was offered for membership. Tom PINSON was received by experience as a candidate for Baptism. The hand of Christian fellowship was extended.

A collection was taken for a sick family in the amount of $2.70.

 

Jun 8, 1907

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Opened doors of church now.

2. Minutes read and approved.

3. Reference – none.

4. Standing committee report – none.

5. Special committee report: Mr. J.H. CONNOR reported having seen the parties of whom she spoke and that they were living in Dallas and not conveniently situated to attend church. There and were anxious for their letter to remain with us for a time.

Report of committee received and committee discharge. Committee Mrs. J.H. CONNOR and L.L. JONES. On motion and sec. a committee was appointed to repair the fence around the parsonage also to repair little injury to the church by the wind, also some little repairs about the parsonage. On motion and sec. the same committee were given special instructions to collect from the brethren or members of the church a sufficient amount of money and to pay the expenses of such repair as the case may require. Bro. J.C. GARNER
and Bro. S.L. YARRELL were appointed on this committee by action of church. On motion and sec. adjourned.

Jul 13, 1907

Pastor being absent Bro. R.L. ANTHONY was chosen moderator protem. After singing and prayer the church met in regular conference.

1. Minutes read and approved.

2. Call for report of committee. Bro. J.C. GARNER reported not ready to make a final report. Committee continued.

3. On motion and sec. Bro. James YATES was solicited and appointed to lead the singing services during the protracted meeting. On motion and sec. the church agreed to among themselves to keep his term going in the hay while he is engaged in the meeting. On motion and sec. adjourned.

Jul 28, 1907

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Elected messengers to East Fork Association. As follows P.C. SCOTT, S.L. YARRELL, and M. SCHNEERER as messengers. James YATES, Jason LOWELL and L.L. JONES as Alternates. On motion and sec. it was agreed to send five dollars for minutes.

A motion and second was passed that the pastor appoint a committee to solicit associationaly mission to amt. of $50.00 amt. pledged by church last year. The committee appointed as follows:
Miss Alley PINSON, Miss Myrtle SOWELL, Miss Mamie DOZIER and Gertrude JONES. On motion and sec. adjourned.

Collection to defray incidental expenses of meeting $12.50. Mr. J.E. YATES paid his hand $1.25 a day for 9 days which was $11.25. We paid it and feel very thankful to him for his accommodations. We had a good meeting and closed after night services and baptizing members received as follows:

After preaching by Bro. J.A. LEE the church met in conference. Minutes of last meeting read and approved on motion and sec. committee on repairs was continued called for report. Mission committee not able to make final report. Was continued. On motion and sec. the resolution was past stating as follows:
Resolved that our messenger be instructed what amount to pledge at East Fork Association and that the Associational letter carry the pledge as follows. Station Missions $50.00, Associational Missions $35.00, Foreign Mission $20.00. A letter was granted Sister Bessie HOCK. Motion and sec. adjourned.

After preaching by Bro. SCOTT, church met in conference. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. Committee on repairs for parsonage discharged. Bro. R.P. PINSON and P.C. SCOTT were elected as messengers to the B.M.A. Bro. W.C. TAYLOR and Bro. R.L. ANTHONY were elected Alternates. On motion and sec. adjourned.

Oct 12, 1907

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Called for reading of previous minutes. Minutes read and on account of incompleteness allowed to stand for correction at next meeting.

2. Letters granted Mrs. Mary DUKE of Estilline, Tx.

3. On motion and sec. letters granted Bro. J.C. GARNER and wife.

4. On motion and sec. a committee was appointed to investigate the propriety of calling a pastor for full time and to find out what the church wants to raise salary and for full time also to see about the propriety of repairing house where it is or getting new lot and moving it. Committee to report. Committee as follows: J.C. GARNER, S.L. YARRELL, R.P. PINSON, A.A. DARDEN, M. SCHNEERER. This committee is also granted power to call any other member to assist them that they may wish or see fit. Motion and sec.
To adjourn to meet next fourth Sunday at which time the church will enter into a call for pastor for ensuing year begin the 4th Sunday in Oct 1908. On motion and sec. Adjourned.

Brother SCOTT agrees to take the church for $900.00 and a house or $1,000.00 without the house. This salary to be paid monthly is a distinct understanding between him and the church.

The financial committee were appointed to notify Bro. P.C. SCOTT of a unanimous call for whole time to serve this church for the next ensuing year beginning Saturday before 2nd Sunday in Nov. 1907 and end the 4th Sunday Oct. 1908.

Nov 9, 1907

After preaching by pastor church met in regular conference.

1. Minutes read and adopted.

2. Minutes of Oct 27 read and deferred for correction.

3. A motion to dissolve or discharge the standing committee on repairs was carried.

4. On motion and sec. a new committee was appointed to repair the house at such a cost as may be reasonable and necessary. Committee: Bro. R.L. ANTHONY, R.P. PINSON, A.A. DARDEN and M. SCHNEERER.

5. On motion and sec. Bro. M. SCHNEER was chosen collector for pastor’s salary.

After preaching by pastor the church met in conference. There being nothing in order to come before the church a motion to adjourn and sec.

Jan 11, 1908

After preaching by Bro. J.S. EVINS, church met in conference.

1. Called reading minutes of last meeting. Minutes were read and adopted.

2. Building committee continued.

3. Letter granted Mrs. Jessie HUDSON of Ringold.

4. L.L. JONES resigned his office as clerk and treasure of the church cause going to move from the town. On motion and sec. Adjourned.

Feb 8, 1908

After reading and prayer by pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

2. Committee on repairing parsonage not being ready to report, Bro. P.C. SCOTT stated that the work is almost completed, and is very satisfactory.

3. On motion and sec. Letters were granted Bro. and Sister M.L. HUNEYCUT
to join the Missionary Baptist Church at Arlington.

4. On Jan. 26, the church received into fellow Mrs. S.D. WILSON on the promise of a letter from the Grand Saline Missionary Baptist Church, but the letter failing to come, this church, on motion and sec. rescinded their action.

5. On motion and sec., adjourned.

Mar 7, 1908

The Forney Baptist Church met in conference March 7, 1908 after sermon by
the pastor.

1. The minutes of previous meeting were read.

2. The chairman of Building committee made a verbal report, but owing to the incompleteness of the work, no action was taken.

3. Several communications were read and filed.

4. Miss Ora ADAMS made acknowledgments, and was restored to the
fellowship of the church, and granted a letter of dismission from the church.

5. On motion and sec, the church meeting adjourned.

Apr 11, 1908

After preaching by the pastor the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and approved.

2. Letters of dismission granted Dr. L.L. JONES, and family.

3. On motion and sec. Brethren N.C. WHITTEMORE, E.M. DOZIER, J.P.
KEMP, and A.A. DARDEN were elected as deacons of this church and Sunday
April 19, set as the time of their ordination.

4. The board of deacons was empowered to select one of their number as clerk for the church

5. On motion and sec. the church voted to begin the protracted meeting one the third Sunday in July.

6. On motion and sec. the church voted to begin the protracted meeting on the third Sunday in July.

7. The church conference adjourned.

On account of much rain and high waters the newly elected deacons were not ordained until Sunday April 26, at which time our Pastor Bro. P.C. SCOTT read the 3rd Chapter of I Timothy and preached the ordination sermon. After preaching the church formed a presbytery of the following brethren: J.C. GARNER, C.J. STARNES, G.W. RITCHIE, R.L. ANTHONY, Rufus ANDERSON and Bro. HEAD to sit in conference with the church to ordain the deacons. Then Brethren E.M. DOZIER, A.A. DARDEN, J.P. KEMP, and N.C. WHITTEMORE were examined in doctrine and found to be scriptural Baptists and stated their Christian experience, and were ordained deacons of the Forney Missionary Baptist Church, April 26, 1908. Then Bro. C.J. STARNES gave the church charge as to their duties and how best to meet them. Then E.M. DOZIER, A.A. DARDEN, J.P. KEMP, N.C. WHITTEMORE and J.T. MILLER all stood and the church came forward to shake hands with them signifying that they would assist them in their duties. Then the meeting adjourned.

 

May 9, 1908

After preaching by the pastor, the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and corrected on two-points as follows:
(1st) Church, instead of pastor appointed the presbytery. (2nd) Bro. STARNES charge was to the church, instead of to the deacons.

2. On motion and sec. the church withdrew fellowship from Mrs. Grover FIX
and Mrs. Bonnie RICHMON on the charge of heresy.

3. The church voted to cancel her 11 oclock service on tomorrow May 10,
on account of the sermon of the school exercises being at that time.

4. On motion and sec. the church voted to have Bro. P.C. SCOTT do the
preaching in the protracted meeting instead of getting someone else.

5. On motion and sec. the church voted to release Bro. SCOTT on Sunday,
May 17, 1908, so he could preach the commencement sermon of the school
exercises at Jacksonville at that time.

6. On motion and sec. the church voted to ask Bro. SPILLMAN to preach
in Bro. SCOTT’s place the third Sunday, May 17.

7. Mention was made of some leaks in the church roof, also some guttering to be put on the parsonage, so the deacons are requested to have the repairs done.

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and corrected as to the number of members received in the Pleasant Springs meeting, there being 20 instead of 17.

2. Alma and Forney meetings to be written up as supplements to the minutes of July 11.

3. Bro. P.C. SCOTT, N.C. WHITTEMORE and A.A. DARDEN were elected messengers to the East Fork Association to meet with the Willow Springs
Baptist Church. Aug. 20, 1908. Brethren H.B. SPILLMAN, J.R. ADAMS, and G.B. WESLEY were elected as alternates.

4. A collection of $2.50 was taken for associational missions, and $3.15 to get minutes.

5. On motion and sec. it was voted to instruct our messengers to the
association to pledge for the Forney Church, $100.00 for State Missions,
$50.00 for Foreign Missions, and $25.00 for Associational Missions.

6. On motion and sec. it was voted for the Pastor and Clerk to prepare our
letter to the Association.

7. On motion and sec. it was voted to buy the heater of the Lone Elm Church at $5.00 to be used in the Forney Church.

8. On motion and sec. the deacons were empowered to pay janitor.

9. On motion and sec, Adjourned.

dismission were granted Bro. J.L. HAWKS and wife, also Sister Lona BLAKE.

Sep 12, 1908

After preaching by pastor church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Bro. J.C. GARNER and wife were received into the fellowship of this
church on the recommendation of a letter from the Lone Elm Church.

3. It was reported that our church donated $12.50 to Bro. SPILLMAN for
his kindness in leading the singing in our protracted meeting.

4. On motion and sec. Bro. E.M. DOZIER was elected treasurer of the church.

5. On motion and sec. Sister BALL was elected janitor for the church, at five
dollars per month.

6. On motion and sec. it was voted to pay janitor monthly.

7. On motion and sec. the church conference adjourned.

June 13, 1908

After preaching by pastor, the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last meeting read and adopted.

2. Bro. N.C. WHITTEMORE stated that the balance due on parsonage repairs
was $27.00. It was decided to make a statement of this debt to the church
tomorrow, June 14, and raise the money to pay for it.

3. On motion and sec. it was voted to appoint a committee to secure a tent for our protracted meeting, and Bro. P.C. SCOTT and the deacons were appointed as the committee.

4. The deacons assume the responsibility of getting a place to erect the tent.

5. Bro. P.C. SCOTT stated that he would hold a protracted meeting at
Pleasant Springs the last week of June and then hold another meeting at Alma’s school-house. On motion and sec. it was voted for a quorum of members of this church to act with Bro. SCOTT at these places in receiving members into the Forney church.

6. On motion and sec., it was voted to give Bro. SCOTT one month’s
vacation after the protracted meeting shall have ended.

7. On motion and sec. the church conference adjourned.

Jul 11, 1908

After preaching by pastor, the church met in conference.

1. Minutes of last conference read and adopted.

2. Amount paid on parsonage repairs since last conference $11.00, leaving
$16.00 unpaid.

3. On motion and second a letter of dismission was granted Sister Nora ADAMS.

4. On motion and sec. the church voted to have prayer meeting each night
next week that God might give us a powerful meeting.

5. An invitation from the Official Board of the Presbyterian Church in Forney
was read, soliciting us to engage with them in a union meeting to begin August 9, but owing to the fact that we do not indorse union meetings, and also our own meeting coming just before that date, we sent them a courteous answer, declining to engage with them.

6. Bro. P.C. SCOTT reported a good meeting at Pleasant Springs school
house, there being received into the Forney Church 8 for Baptism, 4 by letter, 1 by statement, and 4 on the promise of a letter, making 17 in all.

The first part of July Bro. P.C. SCOTT held a meeting at Alma School
house, resulting in eleven new members for the Forney Church. The meeting
began at Forney July 19, and lasted two weeks, Bro. P.C. SCOTT did the
preaching with the result of 19 new members for the Forney Church.

 

Nov 22, 1908

After preaching by Bro. P.C. SCOTT, the church went into conference for
the purpose of calling a pastor for the incoming year. Brethren J.S. EVANS
and J.S. ELLIOTT were put in nomination. The vote being taken, Bro. J.S.
ELLIOTT was called by a good majority. Then on motion and sec. it was
voted to make the call unanimous for Bro. J.S. ELLIOTT. Bro. ELLIOTT
was called for half time at salary of $500.00 per year.

The church had a called conference Dec. 13, 1908 and granted letters of
dismission to Brethren Grover BOWDEN and M. SCHNEERER.
