Joe Hughes was born October 12, 1881 in Springville, Alabama, coming to Texas as a young man. Mr. Hughes is an example of what an American can accomplish who has the will, the determination and the judgment to succeed. Without the benefit of college training, or even a high school education he has overcome all these handicaps and succeeded in his chosen field. A visit to his farm will convince the most skeptical that it is still possible for a man to live comfortably and profitably on a Texas farm.

Mr. Hughes came on the board of the Farmers National bank in 1920 and since that time the officers of the bank have consulted him on many occasions, where the business of the bank has to do with farms or farming, and have found from experience that his advice is usually sound.

In 1931 Mr. Hughes married Christine Walker, and she has proved invaluable to him in helping to carry on his business activities. In addition to being a director of the bank, he is secretary of the Mesquite Soil Conservation Association, is a Democrat and is proud of the fact he is an American farmer.
